Horizontally Opposed VW Club got its start in October of 1996.
I had returned home from an Event of the VW Club that I had belonged to. I was not happy with the direction that this Club seemed to be going. In a conversation with Millie, my wife she said ‘Then why not start your own Club? I had made a phone call to my very good friends, Jerry and Melissa Jess. I asked them what their thoughts were on doing this and they both said go for it.
My next call was to Craig Whitaker Liesegange and asked him what he thought and he also belonged to the same Club as I, and said he wasn’t happy with them either, So let’s do it.
I had gotten the name from their engines as they are horizontally opposed four cylinders.
I already had a slogan for our Club, “ It’s not the cars that make the Club, it’s the people “
We are dedicated to the preservation of and the driving of these fine automobiles and to the people who own and drive them.
We are a family oriented Club and we try to do things that are fun for all age groups. We try to do monthly Events that include cruises, sight seeing, and the infamous camp outs.
We also try to have a monthly Newsletter to keep Members in touch with what’s going on in the hobby.
We also have monthly meetings to get everyone together and to plan future Events.
At one point we were up to 232 members and we still have over 50 % of our original members who joined us at the first meeting
in January of 1997. Membership now stands at 55, and we are always looking for new members who want to come out and have a
good time with fellow VW enthusiasts. If you are interested in checking us out in person, our meetings are held
the second Tuesday of every month.The meetings try and start at 7:30 pm and go until no later than 10 pm.
